Mexican Passport 2026: Costs, Requirements & How to Book

Everything you need to get it right the first time, plus a trip that doesn’t require one

Getting a Mexican passport has a reputation for being a tedious process, but today it takes a single visit: you book your appointment at no cost, pay online or at the bank, and walk out of the office with the document in hand. In this guide we've gathered the costs in effect for 2026, the requirements for adults and minors, and the steps to get it right the first time.

How much a Mexican passport costs in 2026

The cost depends on the validity period you choose and is the same nationwide. These are the fees charged by Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, SRE) since January 1, 2026:

Validity 2026 cost (MXN) With 50% discount Who it's for
1 year $920 $460 Children under 3
3 years $1,795 $900 Ages 3 and up
6 years $2,440 $1,220 Ages 3 and up
10 years $4,280 $2,140 Adults 18 and over only

The 50% discount applies to people aged 60 or older, people with a verified disability, and temporary agricultural workers bound for Canada (in their case, only for 3- or 6-year passports). You just need to prove it with an official document on the day of your appointment.

Something worth keeping in mind: fees are updated every January 1. If you apply before the year ends, you pay the 2026 cost.

How to book your SRE appointment

The appointment is free and personal. No one should charge you for booking it, so steer clear of third-party agents and websites posing as official ones. There are three channels:

  • Online: at citas.sre.gob.mx, with your Llave MX account or your email address. You choose the office, date, and time.
  • By WhatsApp: message the official chatbot at +52 55 8932 4827. Have your CURP handy.
  • By phone: call 55 8932 4827, Monday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

When you finish, you'll receive your appointment confirmation and the fee payment form. Payment is made online or at an authorized bank; you can't pay at the passport office or at convenience stores.

If you live around the bay, Puerto Vallarta has an SRE Liaison Office at Calle Independencia 123, in Centro (downtown), open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., always by appointment.

Requirements for first-time applicants

If you're an adult, bring the original and a copy of:

  • A document proving your Mexican nationality. The most common is a certified copy of your birth certificate.
  • A valid official photo ID, such as your INE voter card.
  • Certified CURP.
  • Proof of fee payment.
  • Your appointment confirmation.

You don't need photos: your picture is taken on site, along with your fingerprints, signature, and iris scan.

Renewal: what changes

The process is shorter. You present the passport you're renewing, your proof of payment, and your appointment confirmation. If your passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, you must first file a report with the appropriate authority and then apply as if it were your first time.

Passports for children and teenagers

If you're traveling as a family, each member needs their own. For minors, keep the following in mind:

  • The minor must appear in person accompanied by both parents or those with parental authority, each with a valid official ID.
  • If one of them can't attend, they grant permission in advance using form OP-7, which is processed at any passport office or consulate.
  • The minor's certified birth certificate and certified CURP.
  • A photo ID for the minor, such as a school ID. For the youngest children, a medical certificate with a photo is accepted.
  • Proof of fee payment.

The full list for each case is at gob.mx/pasaporte. It's worth reviewing the day before your appointment.

5 tips to get it right the first time

  1. Check that your names match. Your birth certificate, CURP, and ID must say exactly the same thing, accents included.
  2. Book early. Appointments fill up fast before December, Holy Week (Semana Santa), and summer.
  3. Pay before you go. No proof of payment, no passport, and you can't pay at the office.
  4. Work out which validity period suits you. The 10-year passport costs $428 per year; the 3-year one, almost $600.
  5. Keep an eye on the expiration date of the one you have. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six more months at the time of travel.

While you wait for your appointment, Mexico doesn't ask for a passport

A passport opens borders, but some trips only ask for your official ID and the wish to feel at home. Puerto Vallarta is one of them: you arrive on a domestic flight or by road, with no immigration lines and no currency exchange. If you haven't picked your dates yet, here we tell you where to travel in Mexico in October and November and how to save with a hotel + flight package.

At Hacienda Buenaventura Hotel & Mexican Charm, tradition lives on among stone arches and tropical gardens. The all-inclusive plan takes care of meals for the whole family: a daily buffet at Los Portales and, for adults, traditional Mexican dinners at Sabores de México, by reservation and with Chef Luz Preciado's signature touch. To end the day, there's the temazcal at Piedra Viva Spa, a ritual with pre-Hispanic roots that is experienced here with respect. And when the plan is the sea, our shuttle takes you to the beach in just a few minutes.

Just as a passport is only processed through official channels, so is your stay: book with confidence on our website and check out what to pack for your trip to Puerto Vallarta.

Break in your new passport when the time comes. In the meantime, your home away from home is waiting for you in Vallarta. Book at haciendaonline.com.mx.
